Writing in the Disciplines WID Workshop Enrollment Form
In January of each
year, the Writing Outcomes Program will offer annual WID faculty development
workshop. While specific session topics will change, general subjects
include designing and creating effective writing assignments, providing effective feedback in an efficient manner, integrating critical thinking and writing in effective learning events, and developing and workshopping materials for classroom implementation.
Participation in the workshop requires a two-year commitment. During the first year, a “participant” will attend the workshop, implement the material in the classroom, attend occasional meetings, and gather assessment artifacts. During the second year, the participant becomes a “mentor,” attending the workshop and assisting one of that year’s participants. Faculty will receive a $200 stipend for the first year and a $300 stipend for the second year. Although exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis, the workshop is limited to faculty teaching UI100 and/or upper-division UI courses.
Because the workshop is funded by an FFR implementation grant, assessment is a must. Participants will be required to assemble a portfolio containing the following pre- and post-workshop artifacts: 1. The writing assignment and other relevant minor/process assignments; 2. Teaching plans, notes, etc., for those lessons relevant to the assignment; 3. Selected student artifacts reflecting the range of performance; 4. Grade distributions for the assignment.
In addition, each faculty member will include a self-analysis that describes changes and/or improvements in teaching and learning resulting from the workshop. The portfolio will be assessed by the Writing Outcomes Program, which will provide feedback to the faculty member.
