The Writing Center is for all students--graduate and undergraduate, freshmen to seniors, international and non-traditional--who think they might benefit from an experienced tutor's advising them about their writing. It is not just for students who think of themselves as poor writers. And it's absolutely free. To read more about who visits the Writing Center and in what numbers, go to Facts and Figures.
Good writers know the value of "trying out" a passage on a reader. Tutors are ready to deal with matters ranging from grammar and mechanics to broader concerns like focus, development, organization, and style. Tutors can also help you prepare for the Writing Proficiency Exam that all students are required to take after they have earned 75 credit hours.
You may drop in and receive immediate attention from a tutor on duty, or you may sign up for weekly conferences. On-the-spot conferences are appropriate if you have particular questions about a draft you're working on or if you just want someone to respond to your writing, to give you an honest, objective, and expert opinion about the quality of a particular paper.
The weekly conferences would be helpful if you're taking a course that requires a lot of writing--English, obviously, or history or even some science courses. Your tutor can help you plan, write, and revise your papers. The weekly conferences also help you identify problem areas in your writing in general and help you work systematically to improve. If you do plan on seeking assistance in the Center on a regular basis, you should go ahead and sign up for weekly conferences--so you'll be working with the same tutor all the time.
Occasionally, instructors refer particular students for a series of conferences. In that case, the tutor will keep your instructor informed about your work by reports at regular intervals.
