WP001: The English Composition Placement Examination

WP001 is a 50-minute impromptu essay examination offered at 8:30 AM during FirstSTEP orientation.  Students with documented learning disabilities should contact Testing Services to arrange for special accommodations.

WP001 asks students to write an expository essay approximately two pages in length on a general topic.  The topic is randomly selected from the following list:

• Association with Groups

• Automobiles

• Challenge

• Change of Mind

• Conflict

• Disappointment

• Education

• Fight

• Great Moments

• Growing Up

• High Tech

• Hometown

• Influential People

• Job

• Luck

• Problem to Overcome

• Risks

• Significant Event

• Something Successful

• Success

• Teacher

• Technology

• Test

• Valued Item

WP001 is scored holistically by the Writing Outcomes Program on a scale of 0-6.  Depending on the student's score, the student's ACT English subscore, and the student's high school class rank, the student will be placed into EN099: Writing Skills Workshop or EN100: English Composition according to Southeast's placement protocol.
