Identifying and Correcting Sentence Fragments

Fragments Lacking a Subject


The following are sentence fragments  because they lack a subject.  Readers don't know who or what is being discussed.

 

Became important because scientists understood how important soil organisms are.

(WHAT became important?)

 

Later ate all the pizza that was in the fridge.

(WHO ate it?)

 

This problem can be easily corrected by including a subject:

 

Microbiology became important because scientists understood how important soil organisms are.

 

Hank later ate all the pizza that was in the fridge.
