Identifying and Correcting Sentence Fragments


A sentence fragment looks like a sentence.  It starts with a capital letter and ends with a period or other appropriate end punctuation.   The problem with a sentence fragment is that it can't stand alone, usually for one of three reasons:

  1. it lacks a subject

  2. it lacks a verb

  3. it is a dependent clause--one that relies on another clause to complete its meaning.

Let's look at an example of each type of fragment and learn how to correct it.
